how to recover data from hard disk

Hi

My mother in law plugged her ntfs hard disk to a mac book pro and she doesnt know what happened. But now she can only enter it from mac and it says empty.

All her pictures and photos where on there, (from her windows computer).

Which recovery program should I run? A mac recovery program or a windows recovery program?
