Q: Telstra Netgear modem, time capsule set up

about to attempt set up of time capsule using the telstra supplied netgear CGD24Nv2 (combined router/modem) as the modem. Do i need to fiddle settings on the Netgear to restrict its function to modem only and let time capsule be the router? How do I proceed?

The Netgear has a deservedly poor reputation as a router and as a wireless AP.

You have two choices.. keep using the Netgear as the main router.. or turn off the netgear routing function and use the TC. I would definitely opt for the later.

There is no direct bridging control in the Netgear but you can turn off NAT. Once you turn off NAT it should effectively become a straight modem.. I don't use cable so i forget where the control is, but just check advanced lan type of setup. You also should turn off wireless.

If you run into issues post the question in the whirlpool bigpond forum area.

Although I recommend you look it up using the site search as there are plenty of posts.. or use the link in there to google search.

    Once you have NAT off,

Wire LAN on the Netgear to WAN on the TC.. Turn off everything in the network. Then startup again, in this order..

modem-- TC--- clients. Wait a couple of minutes between each step.. but client can all turn on together.

and then start the setup the TC .. !!

    Thanks. That sounds logical.
