cannot log in as root XServe 10.6.6

The Windows-based IT department is frustrated because they cannot log in as root on the XServe. OSX 10.6.6 Snow Leopard

The Terminal app comes up without any info showing, it's a blank page.

They will not allow me to be the admin, but I need to help them fix this issue. Their new tape backup client is asking for root access.

Any ideas?

Root login is normally disabled as a security measure. it can be enabled, but shouldn't be needed for normal operations.

If you need to run a command as root, use sudo to temporarily elevate your privileges. Use sudo -s if you want a root shell.
