Traveling with iphone

I got my iphone a few months back and I am traveling to the States for 4 days with it for the first time. If I set my Celluar Data and Roaming Data to OFF before I leave home (Canada) that will stop me from being able to go on the internet / facebook / play games that require data, right? Also, will I still be able to use wifi in my hotel if I turn both those things off? And lastly, with both those things off will I still be able to send / receive texts (I know there will be a charge for that)??

You would have to enable roaming to send an SMS text message, and you would further have to enable cellular data to send an MMS message.

What would be the best to ensure no erroneous cell charges is turn on airplane mode, then just re-enable wifi by itself. Then just use free wifi when available for email, web access, and iMessage messages. If you can get by that way, you will ensure no surprise charges at all.

In theory yes, but I wouldn't trust it. I've seen too many horror stories. Put your phone in Airplane Mode. Read here:

You can turn WiFi back on in Airplane Mode.

Nope. Requires a cellular connection. You'd have to get a roaming package from your carrier.
