Safari 4.1.3 quits at SSL(?) drop down boxes

Hi. I posted this in the Safari area, couldn't get a response, thought I'd try here.

I am maxed out at OSX 10.4.11 and safari 4.1.3 on an old G4.

Just yesterday Safari repeatedly malfunctioned when accessing secure (SSL?) site drop-down boxes while trying to pay utility bills online. The boxes drop down, the desired selection can be highlighted, but when the cursor is lifted, the change is NOT made, the beach ball spins, Safari quits. Every time. On several different sites. Data can be entered in the blank spaces, but using the drop-down boxes results in a stall, then quit.

These type of tasks were accomplished as recently as the day before. Other Safari functions (browsing, youtube etc) seem to work. Firefox works in all areas.

Any ideas?

Attached a grab, just in case I'm mis-identifying anything. I'm entirely unfamiliar with secure sites, other than using them. What I call a drop-down box are labeled "Any", "0", "no maximum" on the grab.

Now Safari is starting to occasionally quit elsewhere, including this slow-loading site.

Boot / Restart doesn't seem to help. Have done routine Repair Permissions on HD, seemingly not needed.

Tried Reset Safari. No change.

Also emptied InputManagers folder. No change.

Tried trashing any "com.apple.safari.xxx.plist." files I could find in any Library>Preferences. Original problem persists and Safari now running discernibly slower.

Would simply re-installing Safari help? If so, is there any uninstall needed, or other steps to take? Any secret hidden folders that need to be trashed?

Will bookmarks be retained with a simple re-install?

Thanks in advance.

Hey BDAqua, it's me again, the guy with the ancient G4.

You had me create a 2nd admin account a couple problems ago. Logged into the new account. Exact same behavior in Safari. Using a drop-down box (on what I presume are secure sites) causes stall, then quit.

Firefox has been tested all along, it works fine. Other unrelated apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, iTunes, Preview, TextEdit etc) all work fine.

Since trying to find Safari prefs to trash, Safari is running slower than before, but aside from the drop boxes, seems able to perform other functions like normal browsing. Youtube plays back no better or worse than it did before.

Nope, not a secure site in anyway, it works here, and after looking at what it uses I suspect maybe Java Script.

Here's the things it loads...

If a more detailed description helps, here is another site with drop-downs:

http://www.creativehotlist.com/index.asp?linktarget=search_map_j.html

Again, not asecure site obviously, but the same behavior on my Safari. More specifically, I can cause the drop-down to occur, I can run the cursor up and down the choices, rolling over temporarily highlights them. If I click / select anything but the default ("State"), that selection is NOT made, the default "State" remains in view, slight pause, beach ball spins for 20-25 seconds, Safari quits, and the advisory window appears.

Other stuff, probably not relevant.

These items (I think they're plug-ins), listed in the same block as Preferences in the Safari drop-down menu, are in place:

Right-click Flash (disabled)

SafariBlock (enabled)

Block Pop-Up Windows (enabled)

ClickToFlash (disabled)

I'd quit Safari & move all those plug-ins to the DEsktop for now & rebbot & try Sari.

How do you identify / find the plug-ins? Sherlock them individually? (The Safari app stands alone, no folder). Are they ID'd as plug-ins?

Other than that open Console in Utilities, look for Crash logs>Safari & postthe last crash.

This may be a slippery slope that takes us back to my most recent issue we worked on, so stand by for a long story...

This entry came up in the console, presumably while testing drop-down boxes:

Apr 3 19:28:28 localhost crashdump[618]: Safari crashed

These two items immediately followed:

Apr 3 19:28:32 localhost crashdump[618]: crash report written to: /Users/ZZZZ/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log

2012-04-03 19:29:08.320 Safari[620] Warning: Instances of type NSURLConnection do not respond to _initWithRequest:delegate:usesCache:maxContentLength:startImmediately:

My prior issue, mostly resolved, was that I was trying to use an outboard HD as the Startup Disk. I've generally been able to do that, but it seems like the (old and wobbly) internal HD still seems to have some influence on one thing or another; it seems as though it can never be entirely bypassed. (I never did replace the internal HD, $$)

The reason I mention this is that the 19:28:32 entry says the crash report was written to the (supposedly bypassed) internal HD and not the currently chosen Startup Disk (confirmed, looking at both HD's Libraries).

It may have NOTHING to do with today's issue; I only mention it because it's odd (to me) behavior.

Anyway, the 19:28:28 entry looks like the most recent crash, though I don't see the exact phrase "Crash Logs>Safari" as you wrote.

Please advise how to stash plug-ins. Thanx!

crash report written to: /Users/ZZZZ/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log

WE need you to post that log.

Oh yes, if bad enough a bad internal drive can mess up any good external booting drive. 😟
