Just got my new iPad and would like to open an attachment from my mail that was send in .doc format but is not opening... Any ideas? I had documents free application and stil does not work... Any suggestions ?

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!
Failing that, can the sender (1) resend it, (2) resend it under a new name, or (3) convert it to PDF and resend it?
You can use 3rd party Apps like Quickoffice or Office2 HD in conjunction with File Sharing to Add .doc files to iPad. You can open, edit and save the documents.

you might need Pages for iOS, no other application can open .doc files on the iPad (to my knowlege)
Sorry, there are many apps that will open .doc and .docx files.
The ones mentioned above, Documents to Go and others.
Not htat pages doesn't work, but there are other options, many of which have more 'bang for your buck'.....as in do more for the price point of Pages. (Pages, Numbers and Keynote will set you back 9.99 each I believe, the premium version of docs to go, which has powerpoint editing ability and access to cloud storage, is less than 20 if I'm recalling correctly)
I have interpreted your post as not being able to open (view) the attachment in Quick Look whereas most others have gone down the line of being able to save (and edit) it in a compatible app! Which is correct?
I have just experianced the same problem on an iPad 2 running 5.1 (9B176). I did not have the problem previously. And then 2 days ago I cannot open attachments (.doc or .xls). They worked fine before, the day before. On tapping
On the attachment it appears to try and download the file (even though it had done so already) then the icon flickers and then nothing. I have been to the local Genious Bar today. And after some time, and the discovery that's iPhone 4 has am identical problem the Genious was stumped. Strangely he had seem something similar a few days before and he resent the email to me, that email had the attachments and they opened fine. The Genious mans thought is that there is an OS problem that that will be hopefully fixed in the next release... The only problem with that is that to be useful the ipad needs to be able to view these documents, which it has been doing brilliantly up until the end of this week? So hopefully the next release will do the job, but sooner rather than later would be good please Apple.
