How to restore single event from TM to iphoto '11 (lion)

I want to delete parts of my iphoto library (because of HD starting to get full) and be able to restore seperate events or photos from TM later on, but this seems to be impossible with iphoto 11 and lion :-(

Any ideas how to overcome this problem are highly apreciated!

cheers

It's not and it's also unwise.

Time Machine is not an archiving application. If you delete material from your Mac it will also be deleted from Time Machine eventually. When 'eventually' might actually be depends on the size of your Back up media and the amount of data, but it will be deleted.

If space is an issue then move the Library to an external disk:

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

1. Quit iPhoto

2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Thx for the quick reply!

Yeah, you're right..unwise to rely on the TM backup as a backup of all photos ever taken.

Space is the issue, however it seems a bit annoying that I have to take my external HD with me around...

Bet you're right, but it just seems to stupid to me, that apple have taken this option away, when introducing the "advanced lion"...

Would aperture (and saving the library through that software) give me a more flexible restoring option?

You're confusing "Back up" which is a rolling record of what's on your machine and "archive" which is permanent storage.

Apple have taken nothing away, they just gave you a Back Up utility not an archiving one. Aperture is not an archiving app either.

If I understand you correctly, you want to remove a chunk of your library into storage, and keep the balance on your internal hard drive?

Here's one way to do what you want:

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

1. Quit iPhoto

2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

Now you have two full versions of the Library.

3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there

Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal

Some Notes:

As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.

You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
