In going on a cruise next week and want to be able to text I was wondering since there will be wifi on the ship if I can iMessage/FaceTime without collecting a ridiculous bill from my carrier?

While most cruise lines/ships will have WiFi available, you will most likely find that it is quite slow, and may not work for FaceTime. It will also be quite expensive.

Facetime does not work across a 3G connection at all, so no worries there (assuming the bandwidth is sufficient; as stedman said, often it is not). Messages will use WiFi if available. To make sure it doesn't, you can turn off Cellular Data on your iPhone.

As long as the send button is the right color, it should be free: Blue is a free iMessage, Green is a standard text message.
