I want to use a portion of an iTune song but the section begins 5:48 into the song. How do I edit the sound selection?

Adding iTune selections appear to be defaulted to start at the beginning of the song, and you just trim the end off. But I want to start my selection within the song. How do I edit the song to appear on the video so that I can use a portion of the song 5 minutes and 48 seconds into the song?

I don't see the trianglular tabs, as to where it was explained, but i have ran into the problem that i "thought" he/she has. I feel i should have held out on my post, and would like to apoligize for that.

Here is how i took his reply, which is understandable in needing an adjustment.

In Red: I thought was his triangles he mentioned.

And then i noticed he said in project library which got me confused.

I hope he gets it worked out anyway. Cheers Noreen🙂KB

Here is a reply I provided last week. Hope this helps. Noreen

Drag the song in to start of show. There is an icon that looks like a gear at the beginning of the green song strip. Click on this to see clip trimmer. The song will open in the screen on the bottom half of the iMovie screen. You drag the yellow start line to the place where you want the song to start. As my children have shown me, watch for the spikes to see the exact place, but listening along works also. You can trim a song from the beginning and the end so that you only use 30 seconds in the middle, if that is what you want.

I would also suggest using audio control to fade the song in, especially if you are starting at a loud point. The default fade in is half a second. I change that to 1.2 to 1.5, depending on the song. Also, if one song is louder than the next, you can equalize the volume by setting sound at 120% or whatever you think sounds correct for a specific song.

When trimming for a song at the end of a slideshow, you may need to drag the black (or any color) screen in to end and set duration for a few minutes so that you will be able to trim the song. Otherwise, the program will only drag in as much of the song as you have video remaining. I know that sounds confusing but once you try it, you will see what I mean. Once you have trimmed the song the way you want it, delete the black screen and fade song to end.

I'm sorry but I am not sure what you mean. I opened a recent project to try to figure it out but I dno't see anything about the green song line. Perhaps we have different versions of the program? Mine says iMovie 11 9.0.4. I had the two prior versions, but I can't recall as I only use it a few times/year. Hopefully a more regular user will come along.

In the Project Library view the green, music line is beneath the video images. I see an extention above it in a few places as a triangular tab, either at the start of the audio clip or the end, or some place near the middle. I can understand it being a marker for the start and finish of the chosen segment of the clip but I can't figure out why I have one near the middle of my audio clip.

No, these are not the tabs I am referring to. I tried to attach a screen shot of it but a notification said that I am missing the appropriate plug in, whatever that is.

It appears as a notch going up off the green line of music, directly under the video line of images in the Project Library. The green line has the length of time of the music and it's name from iTunes.

Sorry, I am still of no use to you...but my completely non-techie thought is that if it is not causing you a problem, don't worry about it! (You may encounter problems trying to get the movie off your computer as I do from time to time.) The green music line in my iMovie projects does have the song title and its duration as you describe, but I don't have any triangles.

Now, screen shots are so useful that you may want to look into that. Again, I can't offer any assistance as my children taught me about them and they are at school now. I will ask them about the plug-in when they are home this afternoon if someone else doens't come along before then. They would also need a visual example of your triangles to offer any help but they don't actually spend time using iMovie. They are simply more willing than I am to research and try all the pull-down menus!
