Apple NOT opening Movie File from Sony Camcorder

Hi, I have a sony camcorder dcr-sx40 and my macbook pro is unable to read the video files. Any hints to what I need to up grade or download to read them. The files are reading from my camcorder as .MPG files. I never have any problem downloading WMP.

Greetings,

The files generated by your camcorder are MPEG2 files which are not natively supported on the Mac unless you are running Lion 10.7: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3961

Options:

  1. Import the footage from your camera using iMovie which will convert the files from the camera (Note: This only works if the files are still on the camera. Once you take them off you can't use iMovie to convert them): http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
  2. Open them with a different video player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
  3. Convert them to a supported format: http://videomonkey.org/

Hope that helps!
