Hi Brandon...
The iPhone 3G cannot be updated to iOS 5.1
4.2.1 is the limit for the 3G.
You need to place the iPhone in recovery mode > iOS: Unable to update or restore

Sounds like you had a jailbroken and ultrasnow unlocked iphone, then updated it with itunes when you shouldnt have and now you've lost your unlock and cant restore because the baseband wont let you
but if I'm wrong...
put your phone into DFU mode, not recovery mode...then try restoring again
Thank you Carolyn, yep, thought it was 3Gs which can be updated. It will not restore or recognise sim.
Any thoughts?
nope I believe you are correct Amialis. It was on vodafone then used on O2 now i have it back on a vodfone sim which did work until I updated the software wrongly and now it wont restore.
Brandon
What is the exact error message you're getting?
there is no sim card in the iphone you are attempting to activate. please disconnect insert a sim and start again.
there is a perfectly good sim in which was ok prior to updating
Go to your carrier and get a new one. It's not unheard of for the SIMs to be damaged during the update process. Particularly older SIMs.
The reason you cant restore is because the 6.15 baseband installed won't let you. The reason it won't recognize your sim card is because when you restored it, you lost your jailbreak and your unlock

There is absolutely no basis in fact for your statement. You have no idea what the OPs problem is based on what they've posted.
