Does OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) come with a built-in antivirus scanner? What antivirus program should I install on my Mac running Lion?

    1. No.

    2. ClamXav if you need one at all.

ClamXav or ClamVax: which? And with the new flashback trojan, anything else needed apart from installing the Java patch from Apple?

    1. ClamXav as stated above.

    2. If you don't need Java on, turn it off.

    +1 for ClamXav.

If you want want the Sentry, you need to download the version from this website, rather than the MAS. Apple policy means they had to remove the Sentry from the MAS version.

This has become a more complex question these days, with Flashback acting more like a virus than a trojan now.  We are still in a state, though, where turning off Java and being cautious online is adequate to protect you, assuming that you educate yourself on the threats.  See my Mac Malware Guide for more on that.

ClamXav is good, but still an amateur product.  It still does not have a definition for a six-month-old variant of Flashback I have submitted to their database twice.  But then, it's important to understand that no AV software will be capable of protecting you from everything, and all will have similar holes in their defenses.
