Q: Restoring Library from Vault stops

I am trying to restore a big library from a big vault without success. Since the vault comprehend a large unique library, is very important to success.

 

The vault was made from a Aperture Library situated on a external hard drive(Firewire) to another external drive(USB).

Since the HD with the Library on it it's not anymore in my possesion, I would like to restore the Vault to other external drive(Time Capsule 2TB)

 

In the Preferences menu of Aperture I make a new library on the Time Capsule, than I restore the Vault. To restore takes a lot of time, but it's progressing.

However, Restoring Library from Vault hangs every time just before 50%. I can see the USB drive does not react any more, Aperture hangs.

In the Finder I look on the Time Capsule, there are two files. The Aperture Library_Old created in beginning and file Restoring_Aperture Library.

Aperture Vault is version 3.1.2 and I had to uninstall Aperture 3.2, and I did the restoring on a clean Aperture 3.1.2.

 

The Time Capsule is connected with a Ethernet cable and the USB external with the MacbookPro laptop. I have tried also to connect the USB HD to Time Capsule via the USB external port, without success.

    Hi,

     

    Maybe you can look for an error message in the applicatie 'Console'.

    Search for Aperture, Vault, error for example. You can also try to clear the Aperture cache files and retry.

    Also you can try to remove the Aperture preference plist to startup Aperture with a new configuration and try to restore the Vault.

    Your Home Folder -> Library -> Caches -> com.apple.Aperture

     

    If you are running MacOS 10.7.x, your user library is hidden.

    To reveal it, use the "Finder -> Go" menu:

     

    Activate the Finder by clicking the Desktop, then select Finder -> Go, hold down the option-key until the Library appears in the drop-down menu, select it, and in the window that opens navigate to the "Preferences" folder.

    Hi,

     

    Three days after, that did not help. The Restoring of the Library remains, hangs, at about 50%, it seems at exactly the same point and I am not coming further.

    I see two files like before in the HD of the Time Capsule, the new made Apeture Library_old file when I start restoring and the actualy Restoring Library file.

    What is going wrong here? Could be a bug in the Vault? Do I need other HD to experiment in place of the Time Capsule HD?

    This is hopeless..

    How is your HD formatted? If it is not formatted MacOS X extenteded, you may have problems to write your Aperture library to it. An Aperture library needs to be on a volume formatted MacOS X Extended and locally mounted, see

    It makes sense, that could be a problem. Since I want Time Capsule of 2TB to be my location of the Aperture Library, may be what I want could be something impossible.

    But how I can see the HD? First in the DriveCheckprograma I cannot format the Time Capsule. There why I must do that in Airport configuration programma. I delete the HD via Airport config.progr. But I cannot see the Time Capsule HD is formatted Mac os X Extented. Do you know a method?

    I don't have a Time Capsule, so I cannot check my answer and had rather somebody else would answer that part of your question, sorry.

     

    But why do you want to put your Aperture Library on the Time Capsule? Do you want to share the Library on your locale network or work with the library from different machines? Then you will be using Aperture outside its specifications. Aperture is neither a network database nor a multi-user database.  As the support article I quoted above says: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture Library. If you access your library over the network you may run into all kinds of problems. It needs to be on a volume directly connected to your Mac.
