Will this update install Java on Lion?

I'm running Lion (10.7.3) and i don't even have Java installed. If i install "Java for OS X 2012-001" as the Software Update tool shows me, will this install java ?

Why is it even showing me this update, when i don't even have Java installed ?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Are you sure you haven't installed Java? What happens if type the following from the Terminal's command line:

java -version

What happens when you go to this test page: http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp ?

If you really don't have Java, then it would be truly a unfortunate bug causing people people to install software that actually makes their systems less secure.

If have haven't needed any Java before, don't install it now. If you do need Java in the future (and I sincerely hope you don't - that would be a sad future indeed), you will automatically get the latest Java version via the just-in-time installer.

I typed java -version in the terminal command line and it says 'no java runtime present, requesting install' - does this mean that i do not have java installed - i'm not sure if 'java runtime' is the same as 'java'. i am checking because of the virus issue.

your help is greatly appreciated...

I hope so. Unfortunately, it appears executing that command will popup the window for you to download and install Java. I didn't know that. If you didn't have Java, don't bother installing it now.

Yes, Java runtime is the same as Java, which is completely different from Javascript. Don't you love technology?
