The calculator is a very simple device, for scientific calculations you would be better served checking the app store for another calculator to use. Last time I looked for one for the iPad there were pages of calculators available. Same would be true for the iPhone.
Just for some further info, to input numbers in scientific notation, use the 'EE' button which is the same as 'Exp' on some other calculators, however it won't be displayed in scientific notation on the screen, just decimal.
Just to make sure, did you turn the calculator app into landscape view, to get the scientific calculator?
