Looks like greek symbols, upside down V's and british pound signs to name a few.

The upside down V is another Greek letter, capital Lambda.
I don't know what would cause this. Is the anything unusual about the location, equipment, or wireless carrier being used by the "certain person"?

Last night my phone sent my husband's phone about 30 messages that were single letters, special characters, and a string of random letters. It was very strange. Also when my husband receives a text message from me it comes up as my e-mail address rather than as a contact. Anyone see this before?

They are probably sending odd emoji characters.
