After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The Drop-In update installer may only work with the Mac model it was provided with.

Apr 5, 2012 2:41 PM in response to Texas Mac Manby chriscorp,The mac is a 15" 1.67 power PC G4 and so I think it fits the requirements.
The Leopard disc came with one of my other machines so that might be the problem.

Apr 5, 2012 2:46 PM in response to Texas Mac Manby chriscorp,Do not if relevant but when I clicked on install I got the message 10.4 not on machine so cannot install 10.5 and it told me to quit installer. I was then given the choice of startup discs between 10.5 or network. I ejected disc and restarted back in 10.4. Should I have chosen 10.5 as startup disc even though it told me it could not be installed?

With rare exceptions, install disks that come with other machines cannot be used to install (except on the machines that they came with). You need a "generic" (not machine-specific) install disk.
