How can I import different photos with same IMG.jpg number into iPhoto?

I have a number of photos that have the same file number, such as P1000762.jpg, or IMG_0384.jpg. I'm not sure how this duplication occurred but they are different photos, taken of different events, probably with different cameras. Once the first set of photos is in iPhoto, when I try to import more photos which duplicate the file number of existing photos in my iPhoto library, iPhoto wants to overwrite the photos to be imported with the photos which already exist. I'm trying to import photos from an external hard drive into iPhoto but I want to retain different photos which happen to have the same IMG or P number. Any help would be appreciated.

iPhoto will not overwrite photos with new photos with the same file name. They go into different subfolders within the iPhoto Library. If iPhoto detects an image file with the same name and date it will ask you is you want to import it or not.

If you OK the import it will not overwrite the current file with the same file name.
