Editing Audio (AAV) files MacOS X, MacBook Pro

What's the recommended way to edit/cut a segment of an AAC audio file (Mac OS X, MacBook Pro), so that I can create a separate AAC file that contains just a segment of the original audio file, please?

iMac 2.4GHz,, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

The recommended way is not to do it; rather, you should edit the original unencoded file and encode the edited portion.

Otherwise, try Fission from RogueAmoeba

Alternatively, decode the file to AIFF or WAVE with, say, iTunes, edit it with any audio editor, say, Audacity, and re-encode it to AAC. However, because AAC is lossy compression, the audio quality will be degraded.
