Apple TV 3 disconnects from home sharing

Hello, and thank you for your time.

⚠I have been having problems with home sharing; my apple tv 3 disconnects randomly ( at least I think randomly) from home sharing.

⚠I can be in the middle of a movie and it disconnects. I cant use Airplay either, the airplay icon dissapears from iTunes.

⚠I sometimes get the iTunes error (-15006) when trying to connect via airplay from my MBP to the ATV3.

When the ATV 3 is disconnected or "failing" to connect to home sharing and the cursor is hovering on the "Computers" section of the ATV3 it reads: "iTunes libraries that have Home Sharing turned on using mymail@me.com will appear in Computers". It tells me to turn on Home Sharing on iTunes... IT IS turned on.

ℹI have tried turning on/off the modem, restarting the apple tv, restarting my laptop and it doesnt seem to help. I've tried connecting the ATV3 with wi-fi and ethernet, it still haves the problem.

ℹI've read that my modem could be the problem, some issue with the ports. I have a Thomson TG585V8 modem/router issued by mexican internet/phone company TELMEX. Maybe setting the ports to the correct ones could fix this?

ℹDevices involved:

Apple TV 3

MacBook Pro with OS X Lion

Vaio Laptop with Win7

Thomson TG585V8 modem/router.

Any help is greatly appreciated. 🙂

Tried mine again today, it would play film or music files from my iTunes library for around five minutes and then it would disconnect from homeshare, restarted iTunes and it would work again for five minutes

So I turned off my eset anti virus and firewall, and that's sorted it, streaming works fine

@Zenfury; its not an argument I am trying to "sell" you on, it is how the industry works. The process is often called "binning". Look it up. Your analogy with the bike is flawed - the bike needs two wheels to function. The Apple TV needs only 1 processor to function and is designed for just a single processor.

I noticed a change to the slow downs ever since I set my ATV to never sleep. Obviously, the long waiting times on start up are gone now because the unit never sleeps. But the stuttering netflix and youtube streaming appear to be gone also. I just made this change a few days ago so need to give it a few more days to really make sure there is a connection here but you might want to give it a try.

Wow, I'm not even sure where to begin.

- never said I didn't know what binning was, you either assume I don't, or made that statement to feel superior. Either is wrongheaded.

- did you read the article? It says what binning is anyways, so . . .

- did you even read the analogy? It plainly says you could make a bicycle work without both wheels. The point is it wasn't designed to. And that, yohst, IS the point. It's not whether ATV 3 would work with just one core, but whether or not it would work efficiently with a dual Coe processor where one core was already identified ad being faulty.

- as far as binning. It may well be a practice many (whether it should be identified as a standard is a whole other question) companies engage in, but that certainly doesn't make it a GOOD practice. The fact that apple actively mislead people as to the nature of the processor is an indication. Many people yohst, let their dogs ride in the back of their truck. That doesn't make it a GOOD practice. Be careful in thinking because many people do something that it is okay. Many people murder, cheat, steal etc etc to infinitum. Many people jump from bridges.

What should be taken away from this is that apple is, for the first time, engaging in a practice to utilize faulty parts to make more money. Apple didnt do it before because they had exacting standards of quality. that is no longer the case. This is what happens when the CEO is a money man, and not a product man. We have seen the first step in apple becoming the money hungry behemoth every other tech company before it became, and what eventually led to lower quality standards and diving user experience for those other giants. It is the way of things, and no one learns from the mistakes of others. Apple has hit their apex, and is starting its descent. I wonder who the next apple will be?

Okay, all that aside, the sleep mode is a new one on me. Hadn't seen that one anywhere else, will try.

Today, while it didn't take three minutes to start up, there is still a noticeable delay present. Baffling.

@ZenFure. No need to take it further - I meant no harm. I was in the silicon industry a long time ago (making CCD chips when they were still used mainly for memory) and binning was a very standard practice, not looked down upon. Simply a way of being able to use all parts.

I agree that big companies such as Apple have a challenge to stay on the course. Not sure if they are faltering already or it is a "normal" stutter and they correct themselves at some time. Not even sure if we're not reading too much into the quality of the darn ATV as a reflection of the company as a whole :-)

Anyway, the ATV seems to have something broken and I hope they will fix it soon... my wife is complaining too much about it already (grin :-)

Just in case anyone is still reading this thread, changing the sleep to never didnt do anything. If anything, it has only gotten worse. Still losing homesharing on the 3, but now in addition, it is giving me an internal 500 error almost every single time I tried to watch something.

Argh.

I'm beginning to hate this thing. Netflix, for example. Anywhere else I try to watch Netflix, it works, and works great, no problems. But not on ATV3. Hardly ever works right. Quits several times in the middle of shows, have to try to start a show several times before it actually works, and CONSTANTLY losing quality, buffering, etc.

Yeah, eventually the box failed on my side also with sleep == never. I have now also stopped the screen saver to see if this works better. So far the last few days I have had not a single failure. Before I claim victory I want to see this works for a little while - it has worked OK before for some time.

I definately do not have the amount of issues you are seeing. Are you on WiFi or on cable btw? I am on WiFi.

Apr 23, 2012 6:56 PM in response to yohst

Yohst - ugh. I'd hate to have to turn off screensaver. The display of my photo stream is one of my favorite features.

My ATV3 and one of the ATV2's are hard wired, the other is wifi. The atv2 wifi at the back end of the house house no problems while my hard wired 3 does. So baffling. It simply has to be a defect in the 3. Nothing else explains it. I have tried every suggestion I've read in every thread. And I'm just giving up, hoping and assuming apple will eventually (although I'm scared to see how long eventually turns out to be) fix in an update. Though since the homeshare thing has been an issue for some time now, well over a year now by many threads I've read, perhaps it won't be addressed at all. After all, by apples own words, the ATV is just a hobby.

I have the same homeshare disconnection problem with the 3rd gen appletv. I upgraded my router etc - all other apple devices have no issues connecting to the router - im connecting to a pc windows7 latest itunes - the interesting thing is if you look at the wireless connection when the library gets disconnected the wireless connection is still there as well as the signal strength (5 bars for me) this makes me think its a homesharing/itunes connection issue to the appletv. I spoke with apple - they asked me to reset all network connections and reboot everything - we'll see if that works. the technician said this is a known issue. I had a gen2 version that had no issues (only upgraded for full hd) bummer its not working.

on a different note - the bob marley doc is up there (i was able to watch that before i started having issues) its awesome!! highly recommend (if you can get your appletv to work ; ) )- but because its still in theaters they charge a lot for the rental (fyi)

cheers.
