Q: Apple TV 3 disconnects from home sharing

Hello, and thank you for your time.

I have been having problems with home sharing; my apple tv 3 disconnects randomly ( at least I think randomly) from home sharing.

I can be in the middle of a movie and it disconnects. I cant use Airplay either, the airplay icon dissapears from iTunes.

I sometimes get the iTunes error (-15006) when trying to connect via airplay from my MBP to the ATV3.

When the ATV 3 is disconnected or "failing" to connect to home sharing and the cursor is hovering on the "Computers" section of the ATV3 it reads: "iTunes libraries that have Home Sharing turned on using mymail@me.com will appear in Computers". It tells me to turn on Home Sharing on iTunes... IT IS turned on.

I have tried turning on/off the modem, restarting the apple tv, restarting my laptop and it doesnt seem to help. I've tried connecting the ATV3 with wi-fi and ethernet, it still haves the problem.

I've read that my modem could be the problem, some issue with the ports. I have a Thomson TG585V8 modem/router issued by mexican internet/phone company TELMEX. Maybe setting the ports to the correct ones could fix this?

Devices involved:

Apple TV 3

MacBook Pro with OS X Lion

Vaio Laptop with Win7

Thomson TG585V8 modem/router.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Assuming you have an iPad / iPhone download Fing.  It will give you a map of your network with all the IPs.   When Home Sharing to iTunes stops working make sure no devices have multiple IPs or the same IPs.

Sooh, did you all updated your ATV3 to iOS 5.01 last night?  My AVT3 has been behaving perfectly fine since I turned off screen saving and no sleep. I see that 5.01 brings fixes to home sharing so I am going to turn it all back on to see how things shake out.

Hope 5.01 works out well for all of you!

I have latest iOS update and getting disconnected from homesharing about after 5 minutes. It seems to me as a network problem because after disconnection from HomeSharing everything stops working (cannot sign to iTunes store cannot play YouTube videos) seems that network is out. Restarting box brings everything back to normal. I am observing this strange beahviour even HomeSharing is not used just turned on. After screen saver is activated network is randomly broken and restart is necessary. I will try disable screen saver and sleep function and give it another try, but there is something broken in SW of that box :-(

I am having issues with AirPlay in general (same as with HomeSharing) and also with watching rented movies. After some period of time Wifi give up and restart of box is necessary. Will ask other owners here if they had similar issues if not I will try replace product it is still under warranty.

I found something interesting .  After update to latest software.  The same problem existed, dropped and shutdown of itunes after 4 minutes.  However, when I selected shuffle mode for my songs, it kept playing well past the normal disconnect time but my ipad lost the connection to my library.  So itunes continued to work, ATV continued to work with itunes on my laptop, but the "remote" app on my ipad disconected and I no longer had control.  Everything on my network is fixed IP address, screensavers are off, etc.

Also, it works fine if I control my library through the computer app in ATV, but I want the fingertip control.

Mirroring from my ipad works fine also.

Did anyone else notice that Pandora is not on the ATV?

Guys, I have resolved my problem!! This is crazy, but here is what solved it for me:

    1. Start your Skype, Torrent, or any other app that maintains constant connection

    2. Start iTunes

    3. Enjoy uninterrupted connection with AppleTV

Looks like Home Sharing stops every 4 - 7 min unless there is another application maintaining internet connection is running.

Let me know if it works for you.

I found out that all this could be some strange network problem. I observe problems with sharing itunes library but also with watching movies online. It seems that after some use and especially when big data are transfered networ dies. If you check settings and signal strenght and other things all looks good but no network connection. Box cannot connect to youtube, itunes store or itunes library due to network problem and reboot of the device is only way out of this swamp. Will invetigate more and post results. So far switched off sleeping, screen saver and device has static IP.

This hasn't solved my issue. I do run uTorrent constantly, and my remote.utorrent.com account shows they're still up and downloading. But I can't VNC in to my mac mini. I get prompted to log in, but connection closes. If I sit at my Mac and wake the screen up, I can VNC in. If I put the display to sleep using a hot corner, I can't VNC in. HD is set not to sleep, and I know this because like I said the torrents are still going.

VNC said this is a known bug, but not sure who's fault it is.

And I'm also having the AppleTV issue. Even when I bring the display back up, I have to exit out of iTunes and open it again. The ATV will sit and try to connect to the library for ever. As soon as I close iTunes the ATV says home sharing isn't on or no computers, can't remember. This has only been happenning to me for about a week. I had pushed off the software updates until about that time, can we roll that back?

I solve thé problem a few weeks ago by turning off the hard drive sleep mode. Since the library is located on the hard drive and iTunes was not able to awake the drive, turning sleepmode off solved the problem. I also had to install a software to disable the sleep mode of my external harddrive since my library was migrated on this harddrive later.

For the past weeks I have been enjoying apple tv without any interruption whatsoever!!!!

since the update I have been having the same problems.

Now I use this free applet to keep my external drive awake (where I keep my itunes library)

Just to add. I have just installed the latest update to my Apple TV2 and am now experiencing the same problem. Basically after 4-5 minutes of viewing content (e.g. a TV show) from my server, the AT throws the thing off and all the home sharing disappears.

Hard to figure how this got past the bug testers, as my setup so vanilla:

ATV2 with latest update (as of 25th May)

iTunes 10.6.1 (againt the latest update as of 25th May) runing on a MacMini

the two are linked via an Apple Extreme Router

The only non Apple kit, is the iTunes library is on a LaCE external drive connected via eSATA

Sadly, I have to say am not at all impressed. I've been a core user of the Apple TV since version 1, and currently own 3 ATV2. That this got thru basic bug testing, leaving I'm guessing conversatively hundreds of thousands of users with unreliable content streaming. And this is the core of the At Home Strategy for Apple. Is pretty shocking. Streaming a file on a Unix based OS has been around  at least 15 years software technology how hard can this have been to miss, and more importantly why the radio silence from Apple? Do they think the problem is already fixed????

I should have mentioned.. All connected by WIRED ethernet, to avoid connection problems. And the MacMini running the latest version of Lion. In short all Apple Kit, latest software on each piece, all upgraded. Wired connections and after this great upgrade has stopped working. I've been using the Apple TV for 4 years. This is quite shockingly bad.
