No Home Sharing since iTunes 10.6.1 (Windows 7)

I figured I'd start a new thread for people like me who had their Home Sharing BREAK since upgrading to iTunes 10.6.1 (it was working ok with 10.5, but I had that non-alphabetical bug with TV Shows on the AppleTV). I have:

Windows 7 (64-bit)

iTunes 10.6.1

iPhone 4

iPhone 4S

iPad 1 (x2)

iPad 3

AppleTV 2 (x2)

AppleTV 3 (x1)

The problem is across devices. In order to fix, I have to go down to my Windows PC and turn off Home Sharing, then turn it back on.

I've tried turning of IPv6 on my network settings, to no avail. I've tried resetting my AppleTV - no help. The only thing left to do is completely uninstall all Apple products and reinstall from scratch. Anyone have a guide on how to do this? I don't want to lose my playlists or playcounts. HELP APPLE! This needs to be addressed!

Add another victim to the list. My config:

Dell XPS Desktop running Windows 7 Professional SP-1 (64-bit)

Linksys E3000 router

iTunes 10.6.1.7

iPad 3 with iOS 5.1.1

Open TCP 6389 and UDP 5353 iffee Security Center

Here's what happens:

- Enable Home Sharing in iTunes on PC. It says Home Sharing in now on.

- Enable Home Sharing on iPad using same Apple ID.

- Initiate Remote app on iPad. Result: Cannot find library.

Color me frustrated.

Hello

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I just gave this a try.

I am running on a Mac, but the behavior may be the same cross platform. I was fine until iTune 10.6.1 and the latest Apple TV update went out. When I went to use my Apple TV to view home movies the library was blocked. I opened up my AV/Firewall to find that the AV as spooked by the query from Apple TV to my iTunes library and blocked the Apple TV's IP address. The ports were open and unblocked, but the IP was now blocked.

So after well over a year of happy relations, the updates did something with the Apple TV to spook the AV/Firewall and get itself blocked. New protocol too closely resembels a port scan? I don't know, not an expert at that but maybe.

I added the Apple TV to the trusted list on my AV/Firewalland all is happy again.

This is the email I have just sent to Apple, following a long string of emails on the subject of my iTunes Match troubles,

Dear Roby,

Following your advice to reply to your message if I was in need of any more assistance, I would like to point Apple's attention towards Homesharing and the problems, from what I can tell - only Windows users are encountering.

Please may I point you towards this support forum, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3856919?answerId=18539442022#18539442022&ac_cid=tw123456#18539442, and a post that Digitonomy wrote which I think would be of importance to Apple, who wish to maintain their customer database and continue to provide the excellent customer service we mostly receive from you.

I am astonished to see that this issue has not been addressed by Apple, for someone like me with over 10 Apple devices within the home network, it is embarrassing for me to show off my ease-of-sharing and high end set-up when it doesn't work half the time.

Someone from Apple needs to address this issue. it is not a network issue like I was told by apple support. I have tested the network and can easily stream my music to my son's XBox and even my DVD player without any issues.

This issue only started since the iTunes update. My set-up worked flawlessly for more than a year until the update came out and then immediately the whole house was complaining of their Apple TV's not loading the media content or can't even seeing it.

Apple, I am now begging. Please fix

Please can you appoint somebody to look into this issue as it is in dire need of being corrected. I have spent £100s on Apple equipment and more importantly, £99 on my Apple TV to be used for accessing my iTunes library. Before the purchase, I hoped that this could be done through Home Sharing, but as you know this didn't work and so I had to resort to spending £21.99 on the iTunes Match service, which again to my astonishment didn't work. Fortunately, and most rightly, you did refund my purchase, however, I think this must be of some embarassment to the company, and I am surprised this is not fixed.

Yours,

Cameron Wall

Let's hope Apple takes notice and we can all continue happily ever after!

My spouse had an older version of iTunes on her Win7 system that would not respond after startup. It showed the Airplay icon however. She updated this evening to 10.6.1, and the Airplay icon has vanished. I tried installing an older version of iTunes (10.3) and the same problem happens, as if the problem was created by 10.6.1 outside of iTunes. I'll try with 10.5 tomorrow, but I'm assuming 10.3 did have Airplay, as my spouse hadn't updated iTunes in a while.

Shame on you Apple for suggesting that the fix is to "turn off the firewall". You should be embarrassed if that is the suggestion in this day and age. As an owner of an Information Security Company, I would be embarrassed to give such a solution to a problem that resulted in one of your own updates.

I will also say his again to all - this is not just a Windows problem. I have a MAC Mini and my friends have MACs as well and are experiencing the same problems.

I continue to have this problem as well, even since updating to iTunes 10.6.3. While the home sharing connection doesn't stop in the middle of a stream (this was better since resetting my router to factory defaults), sometimes the Home Sharing "goes to sleep". I will then need to turn it off and back on in iTunes. I usually have to do this twice per day.

Any ideas? Very annoying. Even more annoying that Apple hasn't addressed this yet...

I live in Cyprus and have had this trouble for a few months now. I did repair all the Apple software which did help.

It is known over here that my particular internet providerl did not supply a good modem.

I bought a TL-WR842ND router and configured it through my modem with new name and security password. The Homesharing works great now and I am able to mirror through my iphone 4,

This is great now as I am able to watch the football with filmon through my iphone. The picture is great and without buffering.

😢 I want a fix and I want it now... I don't want my music only in my car, iPod and Desktop... I need it on my Laptop, Android Phone and Tablet too...

I can share my files from my Win 7 (laptop) to my Win XP (desktop) but what I NEED is the reverse... And i've tried disabling my Firewall and Anti-virus and tweaking my settings in various areas... And its still the same...

Well I can't say the same... Because in 10.6.1, the Home Share "tab" didn't even show up on either computer... But when I updated to 10.6.3 and it showed up, but my Win 7 laptop can't access the files from my desktop... 😠

😢 Ok, I am p*****d.

My wifes Macbook laptop works with home sharing a treat! (but I don't like her music 😟)

Win 7 Ult 64 Latest Itunes. And nothing works 😟

I've uninstalled bonjour/itunes and reinstalled

turned off the firewall. (and back on again)

Used resource monitor to see that the ports are open when the firewall is running. I can see the ATV 'talking' to to itunes, so maybe its an outbound port..

Disabled the onboard bluetooth in case that was an issue.

I give up!

The only contrustive comment I can make, is that if you have an ipad or ipod touch (or iphone I guess) you can see available libraries in the apple remote app. Now my PC does not appear on this as well as the ATV. At least it saves you going from one room to another (if your pc is in a different room like me).

Could it be some corrupt in my library? Or could it be too large?

Has anyone had any luck or new suggestions?

My experience with Itunes 10.6.3 is that it is the Wireless that is the problem.

I have a Windows 7 box, my wife and daughter have macbook pro's. We have two apple tv's.

My windows 7 library - which is wired - cannot be seen by - or see - either of the mac's or the apple tv's when they are wireless. They can all see each other.

I wire up the apple tv or the laptops and they can see my windows library. Sooo - I think it is something with the networking - (says captain obvious) - with the wired/wireless being somehow different.

I'm looking at my router to see if there is a setting seperating the networks somehow.

Aug 27, 2012 4:13 PM in response to ericben

I fixed mine - so I hope this helps some people's cases (I'm Windows 7 32 bit, itunes 10.6.3, apple tv) - anyway it ended up being a firewall issue

In windows 7 goto start and type "Firewall". You should see an option to run "Windows Firewall" - click that. Once in click "Advanced Setttings". Goto Inbound Rules. Make sure any Bonjour or Itunes rule is enabled (I had a couple disabled - which is strange since I hadn't touched them --- but I did upgrade my system recently) - reboot and things started working

I tried a couple of other things - like switch firewall on and off, reboot my router, etc but I think it's the firewall settings that did the trick.
