No Home Sharing since iTunes 10.6.1 (Windows 7)

I figured I'd start a new thread for people like me who had their Home Sharing BREAK since upgrading to iTunes 10.6.1 (it was working ok with 10.5, but I had that non-alphabetical bug with TV Shows on the AppleTV). I have:

Windows 7 (64-bit)

iTunes 10.6.1

iPhone 4

iPhone 4S

iPad 1 (x2)

iPad 3

AppleTV 2 (x2)

AppleTV 3 (x1)

The problem is across devices. In order to fix, I have to go down to my Windows PC and turn off Home Sharing, then turn it back on.

I've tried turning of IPv6 on my network settings, to no avail. I've tried resetting my AppleTV - no help. The only thing left to do is completely uninstall all Apple products and reinstall from scratch. Anyone have a guide on how to do this? I don't want to lose my playlists or playcounts. HELP APPLE! This needs to be addressed!

Hi ericben

I have a similar problem. The playback of TV shows or Movies starts, but after several minutes it stopps with one of two occurrences

a) It simply falls back to the ATV Main screen

b) it says that home sharing is not available

... and it starts definitly after upgrading to iTunes 10.6.1 (7)

.. I just found that suggestion ... probably at least worse a try ..

Just bought my Apple TV, and has spend 2 h with apple tech service without solving the problem.

Sometimes it connects to my 32-bit win7 pc, but I havent had any success with the 64-bit yet..

I am seriously thinking about returning the product.

If some of you got a good solution please let me know before I go "loco"

Hi,

anyhow... it works

switching off IPv6 AND reboot everything (PC with iTunes, Apple TVs) and since then .. it worked as smooth and nice as before...

My configuration:

- second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8

- third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter)

- fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son)

- all iTunes sharing same Home Sharing ID

- 2 Apple TV second generation

- 1 Apple TV first generation

- 2 iPod touch

- 2 iPads

WiFi is build as one extended WLAN based on 1 AirPort Extreme, 1 AirPort Express and 1 Time Capsule

DSL Router and DHCP provided by a FritzBox 7390

Hi,

I have an update ...

As I described, switching off IPV6 helps... but only on one of the ATV2 .. the second had the same old problems ...

than I remeber another setting I did on the first one.. I switched off "Dolby Digital" on the first ATV2. It was a recomendation from another threat..

So I did it on the second ATV2, reboot it .. and since than it worked ....

... BUT I have to say.. It starts sounding a little bit like "Voodoo" ....

Well, I tried turning off IPv6 earlier (thanks Tweety - I had also seen that thread), but it didn't work for me at all. Same old problems. I then tried uninstalling iTunes, Bonjour, QuickTime and all apple services as per the Apple.com instructions, but that didn't work. I finally tried uninstalling iTunes and removing ALL traces, settings, registry entries, etc using these instructions:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/23959/completely-remove-itunes-and-other-apple-so ftware-from-a-windows-computer/

I then reinstalled iTunes and it seemed to work for the afternoon/evening. But, I work up this morning and it once again had the same **** problems! Very frustrating!

I'm going to try to disable Dolby Digital and see if that works. If not, I might try uninstalling iTunes again, and reinstalling with 10.4 (if I can find a copy). It worked ok back then...

I'll keep you posted!

Hi,

Same as before!

- droppings ot the main screen

- loosing Home Share

now even on iPads !

Frustrating!

I'm now more than convinced that this is caused by the latest iTunes version.

As some others stated in other threads .... it seems that Apple doesn't really take care of this problem. So what if, if we could make them feeling the same pain as we do. ... Just by dropping them a mail as soon as we have the problem again. Not more often, we don't want to be unfair, but everytime it happens.

I found this feedback site http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

I will start now with this.... maybe this will help to rise a little bit of attention

Hope THIS helps

Hello all,

Since the last update to iTunes Version 10.6.1 (7) streaming content (Movies and TV shows) to Apple TVs and iPads we have two major problems:

- Home Sharing is lost during streaming (streaming stops even if a large portion of the content is already preloaded)

- streaming stops and the main screen pops up (Home Sharing still available)

This happens sometime after some minutes, sometimes after several hours, but it surely happens.

I followed every advice I could found on this support website. There are now a lot of threads following this issue.

Sometimes it seems getting better, but hours later the same isues occured again. Watching content on this enviroment is a real pain and very frustrating.

As many others I'm now convinced that the latest update of iTunes caused this problem.

Our family enviroment contains the following Apple products:

- iTunes on a Win7 32 bit Noname PC (all content)

- second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8 (all content)

- third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter, only selected content)

- fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son, only selected content)

- all iTunes sharing the same Home Sharing ID

- 2 Apple TV second generation

- 1 Apple TV first generation

- 2 iPod touch (bought last year)

- 2 iPads (second generation)

all firmware or software are on latest available patchlevel.

At this moment, I can not recomend to others to buy this products.

I will drop this feedback everytime my famiily and I facing this problem... just to help you to get a better feeling of the urgency of this issue.

Thanks for every effort in advanced.

Finally got around to calling Apple Tech Support. They recommended adding exceptions for iTunes in my anti-virus (Windows Security Essentials) and hard-cycling my router. I've done the latter already to no effect. I will do the anti-virus thing, but don't think it'll help. They are scheduled to call me back tomorrow. Assuming it doesn't work, I'm going to ask for a refund for my ATV3, since it is <1 mo old. Maybe that'll start getting Apple to recognize this as a major problem!

I know this is a Windows thread, but just as an FYI to all, this bug is iTunes 10.6.1 related and affects all platforms. I am running a MacBook Pro and I have the EXACT same issue that you all are describing and it began the second I installed 10.6.1. I sent feedback to Apple requesting an update, but quite honestly I'm not hopeful of ever receiving a response. I will monitor this post along with the Mac post I've been following and will update with any useful information I receive. Good luck to all....

I have I tunes 10.6 (Windows 7) and I have the same problem.

Is it possible to go to anothere laptop using XP and have success there? Would I be able to load a lower version of Itunes on that machine?

If this is possible how would I then be able to get my libary from one machine to another? Or could I do this through my Iphone?

Same issue exactly. Best thing to di is contact Apple so that they become aware of this regression. Below is what I have been posting:

Home sharing with the new Apple TV / iTunes update is just broke. Only works for a bit unless you restart iTunes or disable / re-enable Home Sharing. Use to work great until the last updates. This is not a network (router, firewall, ...) issue - just a (bad) regression in Apples software. Hopefully they fix this soon, hard to believe its been broke this long already. The Remote app update also fails to connect to Apple TVs (but does connect to iTunes) for many people as well. Poor QA all around. :(

I have yet to see any suggestion that actually works other than reverting to previous versions of fwr / iTunes - which is a pain / joke to do.

I agree. Called Apple Support twice now, and their "solutions" aren't helping. They suggested:

1) Creating an exception for iTunes in my anti-virus software (Microsoft Security Essentials)

2) Removing Wifi syncing from all my devices, deauthorizing my computer and then reauthorizing.

The frustrating part is that the Advisors don't seem to know that this problem exists or at least have to go look for a "solution" each and every time.

Neither worked. I think I'm going to return my ATV3 for now - waste of money if Home Sharing isn't working. Maybe that will get their attention...

Apr 16, 2012 4:39 PM in response to ericben

Incredible! I think a senior advisor at Apple finally found the problem (with mine anyway). The AppleTV and Home Sharing works fine with a new iTunes library. I held down shift and ran iTunes. I then asked it to create a new library. In the new library, I downloaded some media, and turned on Home Sharing. It works perfectly!

Now I have to rebuild my old library file and try to recover my playlists and playcounts.

UPDATE: Never mind. It stopped again. Clearly Apple Geniuses don't have a clue what's going on...

Apr 17, 2012 9:23 AM in response to ericben

I am in the same boat as you. I missed your thread....started my own a few days back. Was working fine until I upgraded (lol great word for it) to the new version of itunes and nothing works. Have tried everything you have tried and still...NOTHING!

Have you gotten anywhere??? I thought it was my antivirus but even with the software turned off it still doesn't work. IPV6 workaround didn't work, reinstalling everything didn't work, etc....

Apr 17, 2012 9:21 PM in response to ericben

Same problem here. I cannot AirPlay to my Airport Express. iPhone 4 & 4s do fine. A friends computer that is running 10.6.0.4 works fine. Mine upgraded to 10.6.1 doesn't connect to Airport.

I've only had my Airport Express a week. Worked a few days, then I upgraded and now it doesn't. This *****.

I'm running

Windows Vista

iTunes 10.6.1

Airport Express on latest firmware.

No Home Sharing since iTunes 10.6.1 (Windows 7)
