iphoto imports upright photos as black

Hey,

have an issue with iphoto '11 9.2.3. since a couple of weeks.

When importing photos using the SD card from my Canon Powershot SX130IS I regularly have issues that weirdly all photos that were taken not in landscape but upright are just black when imported.

I already checked the SD card on other computers and its fine. Furthermore, I even can see the Photos uncorrupted in Finder when accessing the SD card manually. Just when I import them they are not imported correctly, the landscape photos are fine though. Already checked for newer versions but everything is up to date (2011 MBP with Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion, iPhoto mentioned above).

Any ideas on that?

Best, david

This worked for me but I still have the smaller versions in black. Not sure if these are the thumbnails or what. This is seriously ridiculous. Why do I have thumbnails showing in iphoto anyway? Honestly managing my photos in windows was so much easier. Yes it takes organizing in folders and takes up more space but at least I knew what was going on. In iphoto any video imported from my camera now shows up as triplicate. One video, one thumbnail for the video and one thumbnail from iphoto. Does any of this make sense?

EXIF stands for 'exchangeable image file format'. Long and complex Wikipedia explanation here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format

Simply put, it contains extra information about a photo, including things like the make and model of the camera, date and time of the photo, exposure, whether or not the flash fired, GPS data, orientation of the photo, etc.

Somehow, some cameras, including some iPhones, seem to be producing images with EXIF data that is not campitable with some versions of iPhoto.

I think that rotating the photo in iPhoto causes iPhoto to rewrite the EXIF data in a format with which it is compatible.

I had the exact same issue. I was using Iphoto 9.2.3 with a Canon Rebel XS and everything was fine until four days ago. Suddenly photos that are vertical (portrait) would import as black. If I go into edit mode the photo would be viewable. Making changes such as turning it would solve the problem but I was not about to turn each photo as I take hundreds of photos each day.

I rebuilt the thumbnail cache (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2511) and the problem was solved. I just imported some photos today and they are fine.
