Seagate Momentus XT Disaster

Not really looking for solutions here, just trying to warn people to stay away from this Seagate drive. It has been an unmitigated nightmare for me. And a very strange one. I cloned the drive and booted up on it externally with NO problems at all. Many times. The drive simply works when mounted externally. Once installed inside my MacBook Pro, all **** breaks loose. The computer will not stay stable for more than 5 mins. Crash after crash after crash. Complete disaster. Pull the drive and mount my old internal drive (99% full), and it runs no problem. Mount the Seagate Momentus externally again, no problem. I can run for hours. Put it back into the laptop? Crash city.

What a waste of time and money.

I have a MacBook Pro middle 2009 15'', with Momentus XT 500Gb. It does not work completely well. I had to reduce the speed from 3gb to 1.5 with a jump because the high speed was not supported. In addition, there is 1,2 second delay to wake up, which I think that it is a problem for all MacBook Pro models.

I would not recomend this drive for my model, I do not know if it will have the same problems with yours

Thats the same machine as mine, I think. Mine shows 2.53Ghz. I had terrible problems with the Momentus XT 500 as I detailed in earlier posts. I put that same Seagate drive in a Mid 2010 Mac Mini about 6 weeks ago and have had no problems whatsoever since. It processes lots of large video files. I put a Crucial 256GB SSD in the Macbook Pro back around August and no problems with that drive. Links at 3Gbs too.

And you did re-select it as the Startup drive in system preferences I assume?

The pins are on the drive. First you'll have to obtain a jumper for a 2.5" drive...maybe Radio Shack would have one. I'm not sure which 2 of the 4 to jump. Maybe you can find out here, or just try 2 and find the right pair via process of elimination. I looked on line and could not find a key for the jumpers on this drive.

The computer came with a 320 Gb Fujitsu which still works, I just wanted the extra space - am know thinking it's not worth it! Can't return the drive though seems like the 750 GB would of been better for it but per the computer spec's it wasn't listed. 😟 Will see what 2 pins I need to jump and see if that fixes it, then another call to Seagate eitherway!

If you Google Momentus 500XT Jumper settings you get this in 0.03 seconds (according to Google)
