Password protect Mail on iPad

Just got a brand new iPad. Is there a way natively or via another app to password protect the Mail application? I'd love to be able to let others use the iPad for internet browsing or games, but with Mail if you click it you can get right into all my email accounts with all my data. Would love to be able to have extra security on top of the Mail program to even get it to open up.

Many thanks in advance for the help.

Your English is fantastic, it hasn't failed at all in getting your opinions across.

Those apps only lock web-based mail don't they? If so this is already covered by having to put in a password which is exactly what we are asking for with regard to the mail app. I can't see why you appear to be so against this simple feature being made available to iPad users, we're not asking for something to turn the iPad into something it's not merely just a feature to keep our chosen details safe while we continue to use the iPad in whatever situation for what it fits the bill.

BTW I dabbled heavily in my youth but while the range of products I sampled was wide and varied crack wasn't ever one of them.

I think that you misunderstand everyone who has participated here. No one is against that feature. I certainly am not against a multiple account/multiuser iPad, however it is accomplished. But it seems obvious to me that has not been, nor is it currently, Apple's vison for the iPad Apple has designed and manufactured.

I can also tell you from 25 years of experience that Apple rarely gives in to user pressure if something flies in the face of what Apple is trying to accomplish with one of its products. Especially after the return of Apple's visionary founder saved the company from the chopping block.

Not perfect, but how about 'settings', 'mail, contacts, calenders' choose your mail account and slide the button to off. This seems to hide your mail account, and shows again when you slide back to 'on'. I have not tested it at length, so proceed with care . . . Oh, and just to say all my family love using the my iPad for what it is - magical. I'd say that puts it in the 'multi-user' category in my household. Can't imagine me saying to my wife 'stand clear of the iPad, Apple has planned that it's a single-user device!' Let's all lighten up and just enjoy the fact that it is different things to different people . . .

Anyone with whom you share the iPad can as easily turn that back on as fast as you have turned it off. No expectation of privacy there.

A multi-user device has individual accounts for the different users. The iOS does not have that ability. Don't let your cleverness by far confuse you. You are describing a shared device, not a multi-user device. There is a big difference.

Hi Da•veed, yes, of course anyone with a level of competence could select the settings and deliberately turn back on the Mail account, however, that would exclude my young kids and certainly my gran, both of whom use my iPad and would may be be tempted to look at my mail out of innocent curiosity, so would help to take a little of the temptation away. As I said, not perfect...

Regarding your comment 'Don't let your cleverness by far confuse you' that's an interesting turn of phrase - I'll simply let any other viewers judge you on that one . . .

We may be getting hung up on the semantics of the interpretation of the phrases, 'multi-user', 'shared device' etc, however, many people would regard the iPad as something which can be enjoyed by more than one person - 'multi' being interpreted as 'more than one', 'user' being interpreted as person who 'uses', and simply would like to have a way of keeping the Mail application private, myself included.

I think many people appreciate the iPad is not a 'multi-account' device, but in some ways that would be interesting too, regardless of what Apples' plan for the device may be. It is very natural for people in any walk of life to take an existing object or service and to think about ways to evolve them for some specific needs or desires they may have, rather than stick to what the manufacturer or provider may have originally envisaged. Some may not be technically or commercially possible or desirable, but some may be. Many innovations in life have come about by people who 'Think different' . . .

Anyway, enjoying the banter.

Best wishes,

rjo98,

Just found a way to protect your email. Let me break down my situation and hopefully it is similar enough to yours. If it is, then you will be able to use this solution.

First I went to my "mail, contacts, calendar" in settings. I went to the email account that i wanted to hide, and i made the account "inactive." That step is simple. Now you need to make sure no one activates the mail.

Now go to "General --> Restrictions" and enable restrictions. Enter passcode twice. Go to "Accounts" and select "Don't allow Changes."

Now, go out to the main general page (don't just hit the home button), and then go to the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" section. You will see that the Accounts section of this page is DIM. Thats right. DIM.

Now go to your home screen or wherever the mail app is and see if this worked. It did for me!

I found this out when trying to help one of the owners of the company,

Best wishes

There is a difference between my problem and rjo98's. One of the owners of my company is loaning his ipad 2 out to a friend for an extended period of time. My solution works for his problem, and it is still available to those who haven't found a half-way decent app.

Now the similarity is that rjo98 and I were both looking for a way to use the integrated feature of the iOS to protect our email contents. If he isn't satisfied, then at least he'll have a solution. It may not be the quickest solution, BUT it does work.

cheers

You have a good idea, but with limited circumstances where it would be practical. Since the iPad can only have one passcode at a time, this means that you can't let it auto-lock after any period of time. If you did, whoever is using it may leave it off long enough that it auto-locks, and would need the passcode just to get to the home page. If they know the passcode for that, then this falls apart.

To add to paulcb,

You don't have to have the screen lock feature enabled in the first place. This solution is valid if you look at what the orginal problem was

Its not the most convenient, but it would not fall apart.
