Just got a brand new iPad. Is there a way natively or via another app to password protect the Mail application? I'd love to be able to let others use the iPad for internet browsing or games, but with Mail if you click it you can get right into all my email accounts with all my data. Would love to be able to have extra security on top of the Mail program to even get it to open up.

The iPad is not meant to be a multiuser device when it comes to privacy. So if you want to protect your privacy you need to use a passcode to allow sue of the iPad because you cannot restrict an app such as Mail with a passcode.
I don't think that's true. If the iPad is designed that way, why do they have the options under Settings...General....Restrictions to restrict access to certain programs? If it's a single user device, why would there be a need to restrict yourself out of apps on your own iPad.
Maybe someone else has some ideas. Thanks for the reply though.
There are third party apps that lock certain apps, but nothing thru the original make of the iPad software that does that
The restrictions are a form of parental control of an iPad.
Do you see restrictions that make the Mail app private? No, just restrictions that keep a child from changing the accounts that have been configured.
If you want privacy, then the iPad is a single user device. If you want it as a family's shared device, then don't use it for anything private.

Exactly, parental control, but its just not as developed of a feature as I would have hoped for. Seems like there's lot of questions on the boards dating back for years on this where most people just gave up. But that's one heck of a business model, Apple wanting me to buy a $800 device so a little kid can play an educational game for maybe an hour or two a week 😉

That does nothing to protect email. It's just a passwordable app to hold pictures and some other data.
Thanks varjak and kyle. If you have any suggestions on other apps, let me know too. New to the whole app world so not sure which ones are good or not.
Just seems odd to me that in restrictions it would show some apps but not all apps to be able to restrict with an additional passcode.
You being led down a blind alley, there are no apps that have that type of interaction with other apps on an iPad.
yeah, that's what its starting to sound like. it's a shame. Seems silly if they already have the restriction ability for some stuff, why limit it, know what I mean.
Try parenting. It's free, and if administered properly it works great.
Have you considered going into the settings and deleteing the saved password to your mail app? If you do that, it will prompt you to enter the password when you enter the mail app. If you have it to someone else, they will need your mail password to get into your email...
If someone is using iCloud you cannot configure iCloud with out a password. There may be a work around which requires hand configuring.
