Do time capsules ever become full and need to be erased?

    Of course. Time Capsule is a finite resourse.

    I thought the time capsule deletes older backups to make room for new ones.

    It is supposed to do that.. but if you have been saving a full backup of your disk then upgraded to Lion.. then continued using TM.. it is likely that some of it cannot be deleted.

     

    Also if anything else is stored on the disk.. even another Mac TM backup and especially files can that cannot be removed obviously then TM can run out of space and simply not manage its backup.

     

    You can plug in a USB drive and use that as new target.. but the backups have to be started again.. no bad thing.

     

    Or you can archive the existing TC disk to usb drive.. erase it and start again.. also a good thing to do.. store the archive and if you never need anything from it, after about a year you can probably wipe it.. depends on how you like doing this.
