Can I turn off the auto correct feature?

I am using my iPad for nearly everything now, but the auto correct feature is driving me nuts. Can I turn this off, and how?

Any info greatly appreciated. It is not a good spellcheck feature as it deletes what I want to say, and adds something completely wrong. Then I have to go back and retype my word again. It just typed 'restyle' for me, when I typed retype!!!
