Frankly I don't understand why anyone would need such a thing. The iPod is much like the iPhone already, minus the phone app.

It can connect to Wi-Fi, it can run iOS 5, it can text message (well, iMessage), and do what the iPhone can do, minus the phone. And, it's thinner than the iPhone, too! True, it doesn't have Siri, but it has Voice Control.

Application switching is also superior on the iPhone 4 compared to the latest iPod Touch. One of the biggest factors is the amount of RAM. An iPod Touch has 256MB RAM. iPhones have 512MB. The iPad has 256MB (1st gen.), 512MB (2nd gen.), and 1GB (3rd gen.).

If application switching is really important and you are a heavy user of your iPod Touch, then BobHarris's suggestion to get a non-contract iPhone and use it as an iPod would be best.
