Here are two things to check:

1. if the little switch next to the volume buttons controls your screen rotation, make sure it's in the unlocked position (you can confirm this in Settings / General / Use Side Switch To). Otherwise
2. double-click the home button to bring up the task bar and swipe your finger from left to right to reveal the screen lock, brightness, and music controls. The icon on the far left shows an arrow. If there's a lock in the center, just tap the icon to unlock the screen rotation.

If that's the case, it sounds like the gyro is not functioning at all. Rather than a reset, try to do a full restore of the iPad. This will force a re-install of 5.1 on the device. If that doesn't resolve the issue, then you will need to take it to an Apple Store and have the unit repaired. Hopefully it's still covered under Apple Care.

Hi there guys! After trying everything of the above I was really desperd. Nothing worked like resetting settings or lock screen, before I tried to restore my iPad, I tried to drain all my battery playing a game or doing anything that will drain it quickly. I left my iPad about an hour switched off, then I plugged the charger.... Vuala the iPad was working again perfectly. Draining the battery will reset better than the settings reset in an electrical manner, the capacitors will discharge so it won't keep any electricity that would keep it stucked to that condition. ( I am an electrical engineer so I figured that it could be possible... it worked for me ;) ). I hope this helps you guys too because I know how it feels. Cheers.

I came up with a solution that helped me.

1. turn of device

2 turn on device

3.when you see apples logo than press sleep and home button

4. to turn on device when off in PDA or what ever it's called press the sleep and home button (NOTE);when turning on

it may take 1.30 to load no damage will happen but you'll be surprised when you finally could play temple run,ect.
