Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network?

Our service provider, who shall remain nameless, provides us with a wireless router but the signal doesn't always reach into the room we use the most. I have an old Airport Extreme that I use to use in my classroom. Can I use it to extend my wireless network? Would an Airport Express work better. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.
