You would need to enable Find My iPhone on your iPhone and he would need access to your Apple ID and password in order to track your iPhone using iCloud and Find My iPhone.
Why would a personal iPhone be a concern? My company does not track my personal phone, just any company-supplied phone they would issue to me.
Even FedEx drivers and armored-car drivers are not even allowed personal phones on-the-job ... only company provided phone.
Just seems to be an unusual question.

Wait it is your phone but your company pays the bill? Yes he would have the right to track it. However he would need your apple I'd and password to do it unless you have find my friends and allow him to track it. There is no way he could do it unless you were provisioned by the company and then you would have no choice. Why are you even using a personal phone on a company plan in the first place.

That's correct.
They make us buy the phone and they charge us a fee for any upgrades to the plan, ie texting or internet, but they pay the cell phone minutes on it. I know it's strange, but that's how it works. I just want to know if he can track me without me knowing, not whether it's legal or not. Just curious. He's the type of boss that wants to micromanage every aspect of my job. I just want to be prepared if it's possible.
Well if he is paying for the plan then he has the right to track it.
i'm no expert in this field but if your company pays the bill i have a feeling that they would have at least a legal argument that would allow them to track you. but this kind of thing ends up argued before the supreme court in the united states, so the best way to get this answered would likely be from an employment law expert. IMHO. that said, just because it is illegal doesn't mean they might not try to do it.
if he's "the kind of boss", chances are he could try something like you are suggesting and this sounds like a good question as opposed to simply being paranoid...

btw. i am pretty sure that if you power it down there is no longer any tracking ability. FWIW.
If my company gives me a "company phone", they pay it all normal charges: cost of the device, company-required upgrades, minutes used. The only tie my company has to my personal phone is that I have a 20% discount on my bill -- and that gives them no right to monitor the usage.
If your comapny *demands* you to stake *your own* money for the product, and they just pay for a few piddling minutes, something is nor right here. Although they have the legal right most likely to know how their minutes are used, they should also pay for the equipment.
I would ask for a refund of the equipment cost from them and hand it over to them as their property. If they let you keep it anyway, you have your money back on the product.
If on the other hand they tell you to keep the phone and the minutes are yours -- paid by the company as a courtesy -- then get it in writing that they have no right to view the usage.
A few yers back my company had tracking on the mobile they issued, (they paid for the plan also). Wasn't hugely accurate but more than sufficient for their needs.
One day I thought I'd be clever and turned their phone off and diverted all calls to my private phone. I called the office, and to my surprise the planner told me where I was! (My own phone and/or SIM it seems was now the new object)
Maybe if your "boss" is the FBI and you're under criminal investigation, with a court order/warrant to do so.
actually, i think this thing is pretty common - even in situations where it is not strictly legal.
and with the economy being the way it is, lots of companies (and especially "those kinds of bosses") will do whatever they please whenever they please.
i'm actually surprised not to see more discussion on this sort of thing but maybe an inquiry to the ACLU (http://www.aclu.org/) would turn up some good information for workers in similar situations.
