How to sync bookmarks from Mac to iPad?

I just got my new iPad, which is running the latest version of iOS. I also have a Macbook Pro, running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). What I want to do is sync all of my bookmarks from Safari on the Mac to the Safari app on the iPad. I've tried connecting the iPad to the laptop and doing this via iTunes, but there's no option to manually sync the bookmarks. All I see when I try is the following message, without any options or checkboxes, etc:

"Your bookmarks are being synced with your iPad over the air from iCloud."

...but that's not happening. I don't even have iCloud on the Macbook because I'm running Snow Leopard, and that seems to be a feature restricted to Lion. Is there a way around this? Any way to force iTunes to sync my bookmarks through the cable connection, or any way to get iCloud setup on my Macbook? Upgrading to Lion isn't a possibility because of app compatibility issues.

Thanks!

P.S. On the iPad, I have Bookmarks switched on under iCloud in the settings app, but I suspect that won't do anything without a corresponding iCloud setting for my Mac.

Turn Bookmarks off for over the air syncing with your iCloud account settings on your iPad followed by selecting Sync Bookmarks under the Info tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync with iTunes.
