How do I uninstall Lion and go back to using Snow Leopard

Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard

1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

You can uninstall it and reinstall your original OS by using the original system installation DVD that came with your computer. Erase your hard disk completely. Then upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 and restore your account and programs from the backup which you presumably created before installing Lion.

Having said that, you're complaining because you can't use an eight year old version of a crummy word processor? Dump MS Word and get Pages or any number of other alternatives, some of which are free.

You can by a full featured Lion compatible MS Office suite for $9 using an employee discount commonly available to many companies. I would do that but it's not worth $9.

Lion will work with a mouse, but you are missing 90% of Lion's design by trying to. Get a Magic Trackpad and life will be good. Your Epson printer should work also. Lion works with every printer I have ever used including several that predate OS X itself.

How silly can you get. By this time next year you'll be complaining about how bad Mountain Lion is just like you complained about Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger, etc. Why don't you write an OS and stop complaining about nonsense?

Use your TM or other backup and simply restore SnowLion. It's that simple.

Or wait for SnowLion to be replace by MountainLeopard? 😀 Holy furball, Batman!

Lion is making my MacBook Pro run very hot and the fan is going all the time, and I don't like anything about Lion. But...I don't have an installer disk as my MacBook Pro, purchased in January 2011 came with OS 10.6.7 loaded. So how do I go back to that. I think the new OS is too powerful for the 4GB computer.

Can anyone explain how to go back? Do I have to buy the disk for 10.6.8, which I had upgraded to w/out problem by downloading last year?

Call Apple for machine specific 10.6 disks that your machine came with, there will be a fee of course. Don't mention Lion at all.

When you revert to 10.6.x from the disks, you can use Software update under the Apple menu to get currrent on 10.6.8

Follow these instructions to revert to Snow Leopard.

How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard

Use the Snow Leopard CD.

Insert it.

Open it.

Reboot.

Continue the proccess.
