Can I 'gift' iTunes dollars to another acct?

Essentially:

I have applied iTunes cards to an account on one computer.

iPad has another account.

I would like to transfer some iTunes dollars for an app stor purchase to the iPad.

Possible?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I think the best you can do is gift items you buy with one account to another. I don't think there is a way to transfer gift card balances from one account to another.

here are instructions on how to gift songs from one account to another thanks to eHow:

1. Open iTunes and click on the iTunes Store link.

2. Log in to the iTunes Store with the account from which you want to transfer money.

3. Browse the store and find an item you would like to purchase and have it sent to your other iTunes account.

4. Click on "Gift This" under the item, and choose the "Gift This" button in the following screen.

5. Fill out the form on the next page with the appropriate information.

Possible?

No.

Are both of these accounts yours?

You do not need two separate accounts just because you have an iPad and a computer. You can use the same iTunes account (which I HIGHLY recommend).

There was a problem: It would not accept my first account on the second computer, the first runs Tiger.

The iPad is where I wanted to send the funds to purchase from App Store on my wife's iPad.

The amount either wasn't enough to cover the cost of Lion upgrade, or the upgrade only be transacted by credit card. Not sure which is the reason. I really don't want a credit card on file for the app store long term.

Anyway, I'm tapped out on what I want to put into iPad apps, save a couple of 99-centers & that's silly to put on a charge card. Putting a credit card on file also makes it easier for whim purchases I don't need.

Now I have Dollars on an account to a computer from which I do not purchase music.

3 iTunes accounts - one for the iPad as set up - the Apple store is very uh, proactive, about not letting you out the door without something set up on the iPad.

I know, all the world loves networking & social media - I generally do not.

That's more a semantic difference then,

because "gifting" to another account is virtually the same sort of end transfer.

This of course - provided the gifter computer has access to the app store & apps that are to be gifted.

I don't believe this is the case: I can't see iPad apps on my desktop, in most cases - even when I seek specific ones.

All you need to do is sign into iTunes. What would not be accepted?

The iPad is where I wanted to send the funds to purchase from App Store on my wife's iPad.

You don't send funds to an iPad or a computer. You put it onto an iTunes account.

You authorize iPads/iPhones and computers for an iTunes account and then make a purchase.

I really don't want a credit card on file for the app store long term.

Enter CC info, make a purchase then immediately remove it.

Now I have Dollars on an account to a computer from which I do not purchase music.

The money is on the iTunes account, not the computer.

Just log into iTunes with that account on the device you want to use that money for.

3 iTunes accounts - one for the iPad as set up - the Apple store is very uh, proactive, about not letting you out the door without something set up on the iPad.

Why didn't you simply use the iTunes account you already had? And there's no reason to have an account set up on the iPad before you leave.

???

The exact same apps are available in the iTunes store on your computer or the iPad in iTunes app. There is no difference.

Thanks very much for your help, Chris.

You make some points, but it micromanages my reason that no one would be interested in, really.

Hitting just a few high points: If I write a novel here & over-explain, it does not appreciably change the bottom line.

Suffice it to say, if a device is used primarily by one member of the household, the account is held by said person. That seems logical vs designating a "head of household" account. Though the efficiency of one family account is reasonable as well.

iPads are easy to steal. And awkward to master password very well.

I don't like one-stop shopping for identity theft. (Yes, there are password managers, but they all have the same ease-of-use on the iPad keyboard).

You have keychains for a reason: so you don't trot around with all your passwords. I have many.

Apple store employees want to guarantee a good experience out of the box, & thus push hard to have a working device for the 'feel good.' Makes good sense. The end result was to set up a new account for the primary user, which I would have foregone if I were the primary user. You don't "gift" a device, but then brand it with your name, as I already said in another post. It is not MY primary device, though I do use it occasionally.

I have to disagree about one thing:

There IS in fact a difference between the iPad & the iTunes versions of software available & its price.

(Yes, I understand the difference between the iOS & MacOS)

In several cases an iPad iOS version of an app which started on the MacOS, is listed on the pad at a price not viewable on the desktop iTunes version: I cannot get to the lower price iPad version to gift it from the desktop computer.

Trusting that I can forge ahead & easily sort it out later, is what left me with the multiple account mess. I still think its the way to go, so long as I can gift to other accounts.

Again, store commonality is not true for all applications. There is one elegant productivity app that I have had for a very long time on the desktop, but is pricey & I've let lapse a few years ago. It is available on the Mac for $40, more still for the "Pro" version. The iPad version is $20 - but does NOT appear on my desktop to gift in an iPad configuration. It would be quite useful on the iPad.

One more explanation: Chris... The old account was not accepted on the 2nd computer.

If I knew the WHY, I wouldn't have to ask the question, but thanks for the cooperative phrasing!

There's a chance it may have been the firewall software which gets recalcitrant now & again about cookie management for only some sites. I'm past that phase in the process & I don't want to reenact it just to find out the why so much as move the plan forward.

No idea what your post has to do with my repsonse.

if a device is used primarily by one member of the household, the account is held by said person.

The account is held by the person, not by the device as you were previously indicating.

Passwords and stolen iPads? You mentioned nothing about them earlier.

Which app(s) is/are different in iTunes store on the computer vs. the iTunes app on the iPad?

You are using iTunes on the computer, and not the Mac App store in the Apple menu?

You cannot transfer amounts to another account.

but it requires a credit card

Correct.

when I have more than enough in my iTunes credit from gift cards.

You cannot purchase gift cards from gift card amounts in your account and you cannot transfer amounts to to other accounts.
