incoming mail server option is greyed out. How to change mail.me.com to imap.mail.me.com as required by icloud??

I have LION on two computers. I need to continue running PPC applications so will continue to run a 27" iMac with SL 10.6.8

This requires Mil to run icloud in SL

Mil working without incidemt on iphone/ipad and MBP...but not the imac!

The issue appears to be the switch to imap.mail.me.com

from mail.me.com in the incoming mail server

the option is greyed out.

Any suggestions?

the incompatibilities between mobileme and icloud are increasingly frustrating.

i have given up the iweb and idisk transitions..far too much to transfer and a new host does not provide the service.

google docs seems to be the way to go

gmail is also beginning to look attractive when compared with the problems with dotme

I am confused. You have lion on 2 computers, but want to keep SL on one. This this mean we are talking about 3 computers over-all?

Correct. three intel computers.

and another two using mobileme, but are not INTEL so too difficult to keep the MAIL app running.

gmail webmail looking more like the answer

i have deleted the account and reinstalled...twice!

final time took 20 minutes to get server to recognise and to respond.

all mail and notes re-instated.

no idea why mail account stopped working.

continues to work on iphone/ipad1/ipad2 and ipd3and mbp15 and mbp13

other forums provide advice to ignoe the reject password messgae

click continue

change the incoming mail server to imap.MAIL.me.com

the only change!! instead of mail.me.com

now it works!

why?

why not!

very frustrating..a very poor user experience

the worst transition so far

i have worked through itools/dotmac/mobileme and they had their moments

but nothing as convoluted and confusing as this one!

consolation is that windows users can use any computer since WinXP to run iCloud...go figure!

i cannot use my PPC running 10.4 with LION

looking forward to the next one!

why?

mail.me.com <-- is for MobileMe

You must add imap. infront of it to get it to work with iCloud properly.

to change the mail.com to imap.mail.com requires the account to be deleted!

that was my point of issue with the whole process

make sure all data and email is backed up, copied out to a secure (time machine hard drive) location away from the cloud..

we beta testers are a pernickity bunch!

expecting all data to be preserved/maintained when the infrastructure changes(again!)
