My desktop picture imprinted on my screen

For the last year, I've had the same desktop picture on my iMac screen (picture of a cruise ship). I've never noticed this problem until today: the lines and contour of the cruise ship are imprinted on my screen. When I change my desktop picture to a solid color, I still see the lines and contour of the cruise ship! Is there a way to fix this or is my monitor pretty much garbage. As a graphic designer, these lines are very distracting and I can't work like that...

Thank you for your help.

i normally have it turning the screen off. but last few weeks i had it running always on... now i have to set it to play a white screen saver without going to sleep... been about two days now (i still use it / switched it off for transport for 70% of the time)... not seeing a big change yet.

i am thinking maybe i need to put it aside and stop using it for a few days running the white screen saver or i have to take it into apple store to get the screen replaced (meaning a 5 to 7 days down time...)
