What, exactly were you syncing them to? Windows Address Book or Outlook on a PC, Address Book on a Mac, or a cloud service?
HI I am trying to move my contacts from my old iPhone 4 to another one. I dont think the contacts synced in itunes - can see it, and I dont know how to get the old number onto the sim so that I can put the sim in the new phone and then "import SIM" Any ideas?
If you want to move all your data and settings, follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109. If all you want are your contacts, you should be able to sync them back if you have been syncing them to iTunes to a supported client (such as Outlook or mac Address Book). If you haven't you can download the free app My Contacts Backup, which will back up your contacts as an attachment to an email. Send this email to yourself, open it on your new phone and tap the attachment to import your contacts.
