On iTunes my device only says "restore" not sync

I got a new laptop and installed iTunes. When I registered my ipad2 and tried to add music from my library the only option showing under Devices is "Restore iPad". What does this mean.

Also, I only want to add certain songs, not my whole library. How do I do this?

See if you are getting the same message that is discussed on this website? If you do, follow the writer's instructions.

In the iTunes Summary pane you can select Sync only selected Songs and Videos. You have to connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes and select your iPad on the left side under devices. then click on the Summary pane to get to this setting.

Then after you make that change - go into the Music pane and make your selections. After selecting all of your music - click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

After rereading your original post, I'm not so sure that I understand what you mean about "the only option showing under Devices" is "Restore iPad". What does this mean? Option under devices.... Where are you seeing "devices" exactly? Are you right clicking on the iPad name under the devices heading on the left side of the iTunes window while you are connected to the computer and while iTunes is running?

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I'm just trying to understand this and frankly - I have never heard of that happening before.

The iPad name should appear under the devices heading. I have no clue why you are seeing this. Have you tried restarting all devices- quit iTunes, restart the PC and the iPad? Maybe uninstall and reinstall iTunes?

Stupid me...I just figured it out. Somehow my iPad was named "Restore this iPad". How do I change the name?

Also, how do I export songs from my iTunes library to my iPad. For some reason when I log in to my iTunes account on my mini laptop the Songs I imported to my iTunes library ona my regular computer do not show up on the mini laptop. I thought once I put songs in my iTunes library they would be there no matter which device I used.

Are you sh..ting me? Really? Well I guess that is a relief to figure out.

On your iPad go to Settings>General>About>Name>Tap on the arrow and you can change the name in there.

You can also do it while connected to itunes by double clicking on the iPad name on the left side - you know the name - Restore This iPad - type in the new name and then hit return on the keyboard and then sync the iPad.

iTunes: How to rename your device

If the songs on the iPad were purchased from iTunes - you have to transfer the purchases into iTunes on the new computer. No they do not show up automatically even if you log into your account in iTunes on a new computer.

Connect the iPad to the PC and right click on the iPad and then select Transfer Purchases from the resulting pop up window. You can also go to File>Transfer Purchase from "Restore this iPad" or whatever your iPad's name is.
