how to uninstall applications in Lion

Could it be as simple as dragging an icon to the trash or how do you remove/uninstall an application?

Some yes and some no.

Some apps are totally self contained and generally only create a preference file (plist) in your Preferences. Others can create additional stuff elsewhere like Application Support, drivers, frameworks, startup items, and so on.

As I understand it all apps you download from the app store are restricted to only installing into Applications and may create a preference file. So they are probably simple to remove.

There are uninstaller utilities like AppCleaner, AppeDelete, AppZapper, CleanApp, and so on. They can be useful for cleaing out the "obvious stuff". They might not get it all in all cases however. But I assume they get rid of the the main executable(s) of the program you want to uninstall.

Yes, generally. Some applications though are a bit untidy on how they packaged the associated files, hence, if you simply delete the app from the Applications folder, there could be some residual files left on the disk.

I just purchased CleanMyMac from the App Store to take care of uninstallation -- it does other stuff too. When I was looking for an app to take take care of "uninstall", I ran into MacKeeper as well, but I did not buy that, I went for CleanMyMac (mainly because it's cheaper)

When it comes to uninstalling apps, there are many ways to do so.

I would suggest you use appcleaner. A friend of mine recently got a Macbook Pro.

He was having difficulties that his apps would continue to run at the same state after he dragged them to trash and deleted them. AppCleaner is simple, and once you drag an application to AppCleaner. It will search for files associated with that application, and bring them to front. The files it will find wont only be (yourapp).app, but files that are located in the preferences, application support, and savedState. These files act like a bookmarker for your app, and clearing them would be reseting the app completely giving it a clean install. So to sum it up, this is how you use App Clean.

1. Open AppCleaner from dock or wherever its located...

2. Drag your application

3. Check what you want deleted.

To trash goes the app.
