How do you make charts in the Numbers app on the iPad?

I've followed the guides, asked Geniuses and spoken with AppleCare on how to implement charts within the iPad Numbers app. So far I haven't been able together any help or suggestions.

I am trying to create a pie chart showing some data for an investment portfolio. So maybe 6 investments totalling 100%. When I select the data first and click on create a chart, it brings up one single segment showing 100%. If I add the data afterwards it does the same, sometimes when you click change from rows to columns will it bring up more than one segment, but not always. It also does not show the chart labels with the input data, and just leaves them as coloured dots.

I have found one one, way is to click individual pieces of data, so 6 clicks in this example, but it still doesn't show the labels and I can't work out how to make it do this.

It shouldn't be this hard, to create on of the new beautiful charts as advertised for this app, but yet no one at apple seems to know how it works, and suggest its either a bug or that the app isn't powerful enough to create charts?

I have tried on a first and third generation iPad, as well as on my pone 3GS and 4S but none of these work either.

Please help.......

Thanks

Nick

  1. Start with your table. Create the table and values you need
  2. Select the values to include by tapping on one cell and then dragging the selection handles
  3. When "Create Chart" Appears, tap it and select your chart type (pie in this case) - the chart will appear as 100% filled, don't worry.
  4. Tap the chart once and then tap Edit References - this will reveal a Gear Menu in the upper right
  5. Tap the gear and select "Plot Rows as Series" or "Plot Coumns as Series" as needed

You should now have a pie chart that you can modify the style to your liking.

If you'll notice in my examples above I created tables with a header row and a header column in each. In the left table, the first column has Stock A, Stock B, Stock, C, etc and the first row has Shares, $/Share and Value - the leftmost column is called a header and the upper most row is called a header as well. These are set by selecting the table then tap the Styles Menu > Headers > and entering 1 for Header Row and 1 for Header Column

The categories (or wedges) are Stocks and the values are Shares in this example.

Tap on the first cell in the vertical (column) header containing your "A" and then dragging a selection to include all of the categories and the column or related values in the adjacent column.

With the cells selected, tap on "Create Chart" then Tap on the Chart and tap "Edit References" and when the "gear" appears, Tap "Plot Rows as Series"

For the chart on the right, the only difference is that it is Plot Columns as Series.

Try it.

Hi Jason, the header rows and columns are both set to one? I'm not sure whether I have to increase this? I've messed about with it, but it doesn't make any difference?

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand all the discussion regarding headers?

It doesn't seem very user friendly, you select what you want to create the chart and it doesn't seem to like it? Apples user friendly apps and nature don't appear to have been used for this app :-(
