Is there a way to restrict users to change desktop background (including by right clicking on an image on safari/firefox)? Are there any software which can do this?

FYI - spoke to Apple senior OS support engineer, He said there is no way.

Not sure on 10.7.x, but I suspect it's the same as what worked in the past, that is Locking the folder that holds the Desktop pics, & or locking/changing permissions on...

    /Users/TheirUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

    /Users/TheirUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

I did not find "Library" folder under user's home dir. Also this will not prevent saving images as desktop backgroud from browser.

I think the Library folders are all hidden in Lion, not on it at the moment.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to...

    ~/Library/Preferences/

I did find the com.apple.desktop.plist which I've made read only for user (gave full rights to admin) and locked it. However I can't find "com.apple.systempreferences.plist". I'm still able to change the backgroup via Safari.

Will try to remember to check later tonight when I'm on 10.7.3, 6+ hours away.

Geez, sorry, I remembered that I was supposed to check something in 10.7.3 when I got home, but could not for the life of me remember what it was, nor could I find it in a search here.

All I can do is try again tonight, sorry.

Have emailed myself a link this time.

    Thanks...

Actually the OS is OS X 10.7.2

I don't think 10.7.2<->10.7.3 will matter on this issue in this respect.

Whew, I did it I think replace these 2 files with the pics you want, must be renamed to these if not these names, then Lock them or in that account have Safari choose a Desktop pic, lock the .png, choose another it saves a jpg, lock that one...

    /Users/ThatUser/Library/Safari/Safari Desktop Picture.jpg

    /Users/ThatUser/Library/Safari/Safari Desktop Picture.png

    Unable to change after that

That did work, I've added created files with all the extension avilable and locekd them. Now saving from browers is fixed. However If i got to Pictures folder and right click on image, i'm able to save it as backgroud. Please help on that

You mean in the Finder? What wxtenson are the Pics, Right click gere gives no Desktop Pic option.

  • pd007 Level 1 (0 points)

No the pictures are in users "Pictures" folder, it has .jpg extension. If i right click on the pic it has an option "Set Desktop Picture" which allows me to set that pic as desktop background.

In "Safari" folder Ive locked file "Safari Desktop Picture" with these extensions: bmp, dds, gif, jpeg, jpg, png, psd, pspimage, tga, thm, tif and yuv.

Again saving picture as desktop backgroup from Safari is Blocked now.
