Jim_ Crawford, you're a rockstar! I tried absolutely everything on this board. Took me hours and nothing worked. I doubted this would work too ...but it did!! Thanks so much!

I had this problem on-and-off for a while.

But I have finally decided that the problem is not mine.  What appears to be happening, is that the internet provider system (not my router) was going down intermittently.  But Apple Mail misinterpreted that as an error in the Mail system.

But there is not problem at all.  Now all the tourists have gone, and the internet provider is not overloaded, everything is fine.

This happens to me all the time.  After fiddling with the above advised fixes for about 40 minuets and repeatedly restarting my computer something usually works but no single solution seems to work consistently or immediately.  However, I have noticed a pattern to when it occurs.  I only have this problem if the last wifi network I have connected to was at my apartment and then I subsequently attempt to connect to the wifi at a local coffee shop.  I have found that I do not have the problem if, after working from home, I turn off the wifi and shut down the lap top completely.  If I then boot my computer at the coffee shop and physically turn on the wifi I do not have the problem.  I do not know what causes this problem. However, i have found that the problem does not happen if I have shut down the wifi after using it at my house.  Best of luck.

    Mthanks Festee,

have tried a lot and finally the TP LINK solution of just changing signal width to 20 mhz and setting channel to 11 worked.

"You may find that your iPhone can pick up the network.  If so, check your phone under settings / WiFi right arrow on chosen network and see what IP your phone has picked up.  Put the same IP into your laptop using "Manually" - just use a different last digit."

    - Perfect! After all of the above failed, this worked. Thank you.

OK, This may seem a little on the "duh" side of things but, I was having the same issue of "assigned IP address" and no internet connection

and realized that days before I had turned off my fire wall. I turned it back on and problem was gone. Just check to see if your firewall is even turned on.

    Greetings All,

I have resolved this by dropping the network from mac System Preferances >> Network >>Advance >> Choose the network you are attempting to log into and click the - (minus sign) . This allowed me to re login to the network and i was assigned a new IP address using DCHP.

    Best luck,

    Mark

I'm connecting my iMac via ethernet and developed this problem recently. Tried loads of different things, deleting files from Library etc, adjusting settings on my router etc.

Turns out my problem was down to the way I connected to the ethernet port. I had connected via a powerline which was plugged into an extension socket by my computer. I never experienced a problem until I connected another device in the network to another powerline in another room. I'm not sure why, but my network did not like the introduction of another powerline device.

I solved the problem by making sure all of my powerline units were plugged into a mains wall socket, instead of extension sockets. I bought new pass-through power line units and plugged the extension leads into them. Since then I haven't had a problem with a self-assigned IP.

I know this won't solve everyones problem as some are experiencing issues over wifi, but if you connect via Ethernet, use powerlines in extension sockets and are experiencing problems, maybe try this. (Side note: since reading about this all powerline manufacturers do say to plug their device into a wall socket, not an extension socket)

I tried your solution in desperation rather than expectation and it worked. I can't think of one good reason why it would work but it did. Thank you so much.

I had a similar problem when I was switching my phone service from an Internet phone to a cable phone.  After two device changes and 3 days on the phone with the cable company, trying to use the new phone modem and have all my wi-fi devices work, I finally added my internet phone modem back in between my cable modem and my Airport Time Capsule.  It occurred to me that my setup wanted it.  Now all my wi-fi devices can, again, connect to the Internet and work great.  Thankfully, I own the internet phone modem.

I also added back into the configuration the phone router made obsolete for the phone when I switched from Internet phone to cable phone.  My system did not work without the old router in the mix.  I suspect there is something in the 'keychain" I need to change / adjust / delete but I don't know how.  In any case my setup is working now and all my devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Roku, smart TV, and MacBook Air) are connected to wi-fi and working well.
