my ipod touch says i have version 4.2.1...how do i get ios 5...im not sure what generation pod i have...i got it from a friend

Connect your device, open iTunes, select your device under the Device heading in the sidebar, click on the Summary tab in iTunes' main window, click on the Update button. If you have a generation that cannot run iOS 5 then it will say you are already upgraded as far as you can go. Otherwise, you will be offered the option to download and install the iOS 5 system.

I suspect a 2G iPod since those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.  You idenify the 2G from the 3G by the model number on the back. A 4G iPod has a camera
