How do I set my 2GB iPod so I can manually manage the music?

Recently my 2GB iPod froze up so I had to reset factory settings. Now I can't seem to find how to change the settings so it doesn't delete music from the iPod when I delete that music from iTunes.

I have a cumbersome library of music and I do not store it in iTunes as I do not want my computer to be bogged down with all those files. I have two 160GB iPod Classics on which locating this setting is quite easy. Did something change or am I just not seeing it?

iPod shuffle, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

OK, I figured it out. There's a checkbox in iTunes>Preferences>Devices for "prevent iTunes from automatically syncing devices" which I didn't have checked--I recently put a new HD with a new OS in my old MacBook Pro, so it's something I neglected to adjust. Duh.
