I need to show a repeating slidewhow via a lcd projector using my MB-A running iPhoto. Is there some way I can a) shut off the screen to save battery life or b) close the lid of the MB-A with the same effect?

Yes, you can run it with the lid closed in "clamshell" mode.

This citation presumes I'm plugged into a power supply. That's what I want to avoid. I want to run off the battery and minimize drain by closing the lid if possible.
You'll have to have external power for Clamshell mode. You could just use the F1 key to reduce the brightness as far as it goes.
