Can't dump my trash

I just cleared out about 3 months worth of time machine backups from an external drive, because it was getting full, and those items will not leave my trash. I've tried numerous times....but it is all stuck in my trash. Can anyone tell me how to override this, and dump it all?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Thanks rkaufmann87. Holding the option key while dumping the trash, solved the problem.
