Can AT&T unlock my iPhone4 which i bought from local shop in US without any contract ?

Hello Apple Experts,

I bought iphone 4 in April 2010 from a local shop in Houston TX, it was without any contract for 550$ and a locked one with AT&T sim in it.

Then I unlocked it using Gevey sim and using it without any problem till date.

Today I read a news ( http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=21208) that from 8th April 2012 onwards, AT&T is unlocking the iphone's which are out of contract.

Is my iphone eligible for unlock ? Although it was never with AT&T contract but I paid the full amount to buy it.

Please advice. I am going to get in touch with AT&T support as well once they are up by 7AM EST today.

Thanks

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.3

AFAIK, AT&T will only unlock out of contract iPhones(you fulfilled your 2 year agreement) or phones that are out of contract, but the early termination fee has been paid. But, you have nothing to lose by requesting an unlock, & if successful, post back.

so I called AT&T yesterday evening, gave the IMEI number , last four digits of social and my ATT email id ( thats the only thing i have right now of AT&T as I left US almost year back).

She took some time and then said that you would get an unlock code on your att.net email id. I forgot to ask her the timeframe for email delivery.

So how much time it would take to deliver an email ? According to

it says 72 hours, but then again in the comments some people got it within few hours after calling AT&T. I cant wait to call them again to ask about email delivery as I did not get email from them yet i.e. 18 hours after calling.

I sent an email to the address icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com providing the IMEI number.

I dint get any response from ATT within 24 hrs.

In the mean time I called up customer care number 1-888-333-6651 and and filed a case with them as well.

Just now I see an reply from ATT with the details that phone can be unlocked and the procedure to follow...

All in all, email worked faster than calling up the customer care.

Thanks Sohan and Vishwesh.. No more Gevey! :-)
