Q: Migrating eMac to new MacMini

I am trying to use the migration assistant to migrate my mother in laws eMac to her new MacMini.  The eMac is running 10.5.8 and the Mac Mini 10.7.3

I Am able to see and connect to the eMac from the Mac Mini and copy data from it, both via my home network on ethernet and directly via Firewire.

Working in Target disk mode does not work either.

The eMac can not see any network connections though, and trying to manually connect via Go >> Connect to Server >> and tying in the IP address of the Mac Mini fails.

The eMac is also unable to connect to the internet.

TBH, I am suspecting some sort of hardware issues at this point - but it would be odd, considering the I can connect from the other direction.

I am being really dense and missing something very obvious?

Thanks

Craig

Hi Graig, for Migration Assistant/Setup Assistant to work, the eMac needs to be in FW Target Mode, but you say the eMac will not do that?

    Hi

I can get the eMac to launch in Target Disk mode but when I run MIgration assistant from the Mac Mini, it can not find any other computers,  It just gets stuck on the "looking for other computers" message.   This happens even though I can see the eMac hard drive icon sitting on the desktop of the Mac Mini.

I think I might pull the hardrive out of the eMac and put it in another machine and see if I can get it to work that way.

Oh, I had also read that if I am running 10.5.8 then I do not need to be in Target Disk Mode on the eMac.

Target Mode is still the way to go, an enclosre may help, but...

it can not find any other computers

You can't use that mode in Target Mode,go back & look for from a Time Machine Disk or other HDD, or words to that effect.

I do not get presented with that dialog box, which I have seen in the tutorials. As it is the eMac seems unable to see in bound connections, but is visible to other machines on the network.

The image below is as far as it gets for me.
